Christian Girls Are the Sluttiest

According to The New Yorker magazine, Christian girls have more out-of-wedlock sex, get pregnant more often, use less condoms (and get more STDs), and are generally bigger sluts than anyone else. Faith fails again!

The gulf between sexual belief and sexual behavior becomes apparent, too, when you look at the outcomes of abstinence-pledge movements. Nationwide, according to a 2001 estimate, some two and a half million people have taken a pledge to remain celibate until marriage. Usually, they do so under the auspices of movements such as True Love Waits or the Silver Ring Thing. Sometimes, they make their vows at big rallies featuring Christian pop stars and laser light shows, or at purity balls, where girls in frothy dresses exchange rings with their fathers, who vow to help them remain virgins until the day they marry. More than half of those who take such pledges—which, unlike abstinence-only classes in public schools, are explicitly Christian—end up having sex before marriage, and not usually with their future spouse. The movement is not the complete washout its critics portray it as: pledgers delay sex eighteen months longer than non-pledgers, and have fewer partners. Yet, according to the sociologists Peter Bearman, of Columbia University, and Hannah Brückner, of Yale, communities with high rates of pledging also have high rates of S.T.D.s. This could be because more teens pledge in communities where they perceive more danger from sex (in which case the pledge is doing some good); or it could be because fewer people in these communities use condoms when they break the pledge.

As a Christian, I am not surprised by this. Teaching moralism as an end will usually result in failure. It is only in remembering the Gospel that we have any hope of following through on any "moral" commitment we make.

Woowee! There is SO MUCH hateful Atheist crap all over the place, how's a poor little singular Christian like me gonna answer it all? -dejected sigh-

Thoughts of exasperation at the ignorance of 99.9% of the human population aside...

1) Slutty Christians. Haha. THAT, my friend, is an oxymoron. Do you not realize that the majority of self-proclaimed "Christians" are not really "saved"? It's damn true. Just because someone claims to be a "Christian" DOES NOT mean they actually are one in the truest sense of the word.

Just going to church does NOT make you a Christian. It makes you, for lack of a better word, a Churchian. Genuine Christians are people who have accepted Jesus into their heart, making him their Lord and Savior.

2) Surveys? These statistics are most likely about as accurate as my ass holding a rifle. You know how they arrive at these so called "statistics"? They take a survey of a group of people, usually numbering around a thousand or two. (if my memory is correct, that article said "3400") Now tell me...out of the many MILLIONS of teens in America, (meaning many hundreds of thousands of self-proclaimed "Christians") do you think you could arrive at an accurate figure using only a couple thousand? I doubt it. Take the survey again, using a different couple thousand, and watch the percentages magically change.

3) Also, they limited the survey to Evangelicals. That is merely a denomination. There are many others, such as methodist, presbyterian, pentecostal, Baptist (which is the denomination with which I identify) and so on.

4) Lastly, the "abstinence-pledge" thing is merely another example that the average human is notoriously bad at keeping resolutions.

5) For the record, I am a seventeen year old male, (with..um..good genes) I am handsome, physically fit, good with the ladies, and not shy at all. Now, here's the kicker...I'm a virgin. (collective gasp) And I see no reason for that to change until I am married.

Feels great to single-handedly defy the statistics.

Firstly, look up singular. The idea of mass religion is to inculcate conformity, not individualism - or maybe you're not as 'Christian' as you wish....

1) Yawn yawn yawn - blame all of Christianity's excesses on untrue believers, champion its successes as god's victory. Perhaps you'd care to do the same for the Crusades, the Salem Witch trials, and the Thirty Years' War? Do you seriously believe any of these people would have acted so insanely without truly believing they would be rewarded for it in some afterlife? "accepted Jesus into their heart" does not, by the way, actually mean anything.

2) I fear you do not understand how surveys work. It is impractical to survey a whole population, so you take a RANDOMISED sample of a couple of thousand. With a large enough sample size - and 3400 is large enough - and a randomised sample method, the collected data will fairly represent the masses. It is, in fact, mathematically provable that, for example, the standard deviation of both groups will be equal. Further, see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article571206.ece which was a study done without samples, instead taking data from overall trends from several countries. Guess the conclusion?

3) evangelicals are, if I am not mistaken, the largest group in America, with around 47%. Further, save the Presbyterians they tend to be the most extremist.

4) Very true. This is why we should not allow religions to repress and manipulate, making people feel guilty about one of their most fundamental urges: it only leads to damage like this. If you wish to begin harping about needing to have a cosmic Jewish zombie in our heart to complete us, I suggest you do so to a wall.

5) Congratulations. I'd like to point out that you're also quite arrogant, but I might be mistaken there. I, on the contrary, see no reason for that to stay *the same way* until marriage. Find me one logical reason we should only have one sexual partner in our life - and we know *exactly* where any STD argument is going to go, don't we?

Oh, you are such a rebel, such a crusader...I believe, by the way, you meant "Feels great to single-handedly deNy the statistics". Nevertheless, I applaud you on one front: as so many thousands of freethinkers have had to do against the monster of organised religion over the years, you are standing up, questioning things and presenting your view. If only it were motivated by a desire for the truth instead of to reinforce a defunct desert doctrine...

Good luck

@ the so-called intelligent christian:

while you're busy deriding the 'average' human, you forget that it is precisely this person who your magnanimous religion is supposed to 'save'. you've managed to wangle your way into an arrogant club of elitists. what is important is not the limited number of people you hand pick as 'christian' according to your high horse morals, but those who identify themselves as christian. you can try to make yourself feel better by carving yourself out a swathe of 'purity', but at the end of the day you can't deny the hordes of hypocrites who represent your religion.

Re: an intelligent christian,

First off, your handle is a misnomer. Will you next claim that there are moral thieves? :P

Woowee! There is SO MUCH hateful Atheist crap all over the place, how's a poor little singular Christian like me gonna answer it all? -dejected sigh-

Pot. Kettle. Black. Atheists don't threaten you with eternal flames, do they?

Thoughts of exasperation at the ignorance of 99.9% of the human population aside...

Isn't most of the human population theistic?

1) Slutty Christians. Haha. THAT, my friend, is an oxymoron. Do you not realize that the majority of self-proclaimed "Christians" are not really "saved"? It's damn true. Just because someone claims to be a "Christian" DOES NOT mean they actually are one in the truest sense of the word.

Goalposts. Shifting. And besides, this has nothing to do with the sluttiness of those who you actually would quality as being Christian. The only way you can shift goalposts to your advantage here would be to claim that the areas with less pregnancies are populated with more Christians than they admit. But who is accidentally a Christian while professing not to be?

2) Surveys? These statistics are most likely about as accurate as my ass holding a rifle. You know how they arrive at these so called "statistics"? They take a survey of a group of people, usually numbering around a thousand or two. I doubt it. Take the survey again, using a different couple thousand, and watch the percentages magically change.

Statistics class. Take one.

3) Also, they limited the survey to Evangelicals. That is merely a denomination. There are many others, such as methodist, presbyterian, pentecostal, Baptist (which is the denomination with which I identify) and so on.

Are Evangelicals somehow not Christian?

4) Lastly, the "abstinence-pledge" thing is merely another example that the average human is notoriously bad at keeping resolutions.

Except for you, who will not be able to score some pussy even if you took an anti-abstinence pledge :P But enough with ad hominem... this shows that everyone is gonna become sexually active at some point, and those who take this pledge end up being less prepared for sexual activity, so if we assume the correctness of your point #4, then it would mean that abstience pledges should be abolished altogether!

5) For the record, I am a seventeen year old male, (with..um..good genes) I am handsome, physically fit, good with the ladies, and not shy at all. Now, here's the kicker...I'm a virgin. (collective gasp) And I see no reason for that to change until I am married.

Why do I have a feeling that you will never get married, or you will get married to some ugly homely fat Bible thumper?

Feels great to single-handedly defy the statistics.

Yes, retards and the deluded are typically very happy and self-confident people.

You guys got the Intelligent Christian covered. I'll go look for another "No true Scotsman" fallacy to bash.

"This could be because more teens pledge in communities where they perceive more danger from sex ..."

Or it could be because personality cultish, holy rolling Preach-ulators who dish out this kind of scam thrive on communities full of ignorance and poverty. The same kind of ignorance and poverty that results in STDs.

Instead of insane abstinence promises that they won't keep anyway. FYI, 88% of True Love Waits signers do it anyway, just teach them to understand the Bible in a different way. That should work for everyone.

Wow - everyone on both sides of this chat is full of contempt. It makes me wonder if there really is a spiritual battle going on around us. I don't see any reason why christian and atheist can't have a civil conversation without mocking, putting down, ridiculing, and name calling. Wouldn't it be better to have a civil discussion as to why each believes the way they do.

"To be a christian is to be a hypocrite. 'Nuff said."

It's sad because so many Christians are hypocrites. I also think that sometimes it comes off the wrong way, sometimes non Christians assume we are saying we're perfect and that everyone who isn't perfect is going to hell. (and that's sometimes what "Christians" are saying.) But our entire faith is based around the fact that we aren't perfect and we will never be perfect, which is why we caused the one human who was perfect to go through the most painful invention man could think up... just to save us.

Then non believers tend to get offensive as what they are hearing is "because of your lack of perfection, your not good enough to go to heaven and will spend forever in torture."

Basically... that's kinda true, but it's true for everyone. We never did anything special to save ourselves and we'll never do anything good enough to make us better than everyone- it's all Christ.

So more than hypocrites, I think we Christians tend to be arrogant. As for this post though, some Christians will slip. There Christianity doesn't make hem perfect, it makes them obedient. Hopefully they'll be able to resist temptation- but if they don't they're full able to repent.

That's my two sense... I'm only 14 so I assume not many people will take what I have to say seriously- but that's what I think.

To be a Christian is to be a hypocrite.

That's very true.

Why?

Because only humans are Christians (to the best of my knowledge, human religions have not been adopted by any other conscious beings).

Humans are hypocrites.

Therefore, logically, Christians are hypocrites.

But then, so are atheists.

I've far more time for agnostics. They're more intellectually honest.

And they actually know how to think.

Which is why I'll take Gould over Dawkins any day.

Good day to you all.

Oh, the adversity.
So, why cant you people just accept things.
Each to their own. What ever happened to that? Why is it all about Christians?
Yeah, lets just single out a 'Christians' and pick on them and ignore all the other flawed religions.
What I believe doesn't effect any of you so why bag it?
Yes, there is a minority of people who proclaim they are Christians and brag about their perfection and, ' Im going to Heaven and your're going to Hell.
So what? If you dont believe it, it doesn't matter. So why go on about it?
The whole waiting 'til marriage thing can be understandable. I know I am going to wait until I married. It's a personal choice. It's not because I can't 'Get Any' or am not prepared to ' Sleep Around'. It's just that ones virginity can be seen a a gift of sorts, something to be shared with the person you truly love. If you people believe in love.
I didn't write this to be provocative or offend anyone. I am simply stating my opinion, whatever you perceieve that to be. But I know as a 16yr Christian girl I find it quite hard in today's society, not to walk down the street and be judged just because I dont sleep around. Im sorry, but sleeping around doesn't really appeal to me. I have better things to do than seek carnal pleasure. At the moment, Im solely focused on my future like some guy earlier stated? Anyway, Maybe there isn't any need to write this but hey, it's a free country.
So, why the hate guys? Have people ever wondered that maybe it's easier to go through life with a handbook. Because that's how I see the Bible ( Christian/ King James Version) As a handbook because lets be honest, this life we are living today is pretty fucked up. Am i wrong?
Thought not. I dont know, some people like believing in Heaven and hell, just like other religions and their versions of an afterlife. It gives people hope ect. But i dont see why arrogant weasels have to post shit like,' God's not real' ect. Then that's your opinion mister but that doesn't mean that you have to enforce it upon people. Dissing someones religion is basically dissing on their way of life, they're morals, values and all that jazz.
So maybe stop the hate towards Religion. Some people need to grow up. And set their priorites straight. Maybe they, themselves need a religion? Think about it.
But i know my God loves me and has taken care of me and my family up til this point in time.
Good day.

Hi, I'm a christian and biased and flawed and a mild user of pornography (although I try not to be, but still habits remain habits and masturbation is proven to lower anxiety) I'll admit. However I'd just like to point out that the statement "Yet, according to the sociologists Peter Bearman, of Columbia University, and Hannah Brückner, of Yale, communities with high rates of pledging also have high rates of S.T.D.s." does not state that the surveys of the std rates were taken from pledgers. I'd also like to point out that the statement as it was presented does not necessarily mean that the high pledge rates were causatic of high std rates, in fact it could be that the high std rates cause the high pledge rates or that they have no meaningful correlation (not denying the correlation, just saying it may not be directly related in either direction). Honestly this statement is an example of namedropping which, while unethical according to scientists, is perfectly acceptable according to the general public and even respectable.

Look up vasopressin response in male orgasm, and VPR1A. Look up oxytocin response in female orgasm and post sex-cuddle oxytocin response.

Look up ecstasy and marriage counselling (i.e. instant oxytocin).

Look up pair-bonding and sex.

Look up tolerance effects (similar to drug tolerance, why more and more drug is needed for same high) and promiscuity and its effects on these pair bonding systems.

Look up chemistry of orgasm (parasympathetic phase prior to sympathetic phase, i.e. relaxation (only possible with trust DURING the act), and exhilaration (this occurs, the level of sexual intimacy achieved is dependant on the parasympathetic stage, i.e. greater difference = better response, thats why an orgasm resulting from rape doesn't really feel like one, it only feels like the refractory period)).

Look up oxytocin response during sex (intimacy building), and serotonin response during orgasm (and also 'coolidge effect'), the serotonin response making sex less good, and screwing up oxytocin response, as well as rewiring dopamine response (if severe, addiction results)

That, is the biological reasoning WHY sex should be with STABLE couples, in a MONOGAMOUS relationship, aka marriage.

Also look up sexual hangover for both females and males. WHY delaying sex, WHY it isn't about the orgasm, but about the ACT, makes it so much better.

Everything contributes to a certain extent, virginity, number of partners, frequency, etc etc etc.

Go look it up, its science.

wow ok. I know this was posted in 2008 but seriously........we're the sluttiest???? I'd like to point out that the second dude has issues to resolve; you're a real Christian and you feel completely alright with your language? Also for all the atheists who commented- I don't know what experience you have had with evangelicals but I personally do not go around condemning people to hell. That's a stereotype so get over that excuse, cause its getting old. And finally, yes I know that there are girls who walk around with the title Christian and to all sorts of nonsense; and yes i am a pastors daughter living in Nigeria where you are allowed to physically discipline your children and I've still done some things I shouldn't have. But I made a promise, not to my father or my mother, or some great national cause, but to God that I would stay a virgin so I will.
Before you go judging a humongous group of people check your facts. I am not perfect and I know it but I strive to be the best I can be everyday. 'Faith fails again' Ha! Whatever your problem is fix it. I know people who would be classified as 'whores' but I am not one of them. The reason I'm mad is because atheists go around accusing us of being single-minded people who are not open to change and who force their religion on others. Hypocritical much?? I am surrounded by people who tell me that everything I believe in is wrong.........and then I'm the one condemning people? Well then congratulations if you still think so. I find it funny how people say being Christian is not good; firstly I live a good and healthy life, I help people, ( as is my obligation ) I do the right thing even when its hard. So what if there's no God=No harm done. But then what happens to all those people who insulted me because of who I am (and i'm supposed to be the judgmental one??)when they find out that there is a God and its too late?
I wouldn't wanna be you on that day. So suck it up: I LOVE THE LORD. and if you have a problem with it keep you're 'single-minded, condemning' opinion to yourself. Don't stop saying you're atheist, no that's fine, but don't condemn me because I am in love with Jesus.

I'm an Atheist, but I spent the first 30 years of my life in the church. For the unscrupulous, it's pretty easy to get laid at mainstream denominations (the bigger the church, the better). Heck, it may even be easy to get laid at smaller, Fundy sects. I wouldn't want to try though since the people their tend to have more screws loose -- who knows how the deacon might react if he were to find out you were railing his wife or daughter.

Oddly enough, since renouncing my faith, I've become much less obsessed with idea of sin and, not coincidentally, have become a more ethical person. Sometimes I think I should go back just to see if I can help any of those Christians who are beating themselves up over non-issues like porn, masturbation, and the occasional hooker.
